Planning to Buy Exercise Equipment? Follow These 7 Key Tips

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

With the start of the New Year, are you thinking about improving your personal fitness? Perhaps dropping a few pounds or toning up? Deciding to get in better shape is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions around. Buying exercise equipment for your home is one of the best ways to make it happen–but it’s easier said than done.

There are thousands of different home fitness products on the market today, from ab machines to treadmills, weight lifting systems to elliptical trainers, and that’s just for starters. With so many choices, which should you select?

In this article, we’ll cover seven easy tips you can follow that will guide you to the best exercise equipment for your needs, and your budget.

1) Decide on your fitness goals.

Before you can begin your search in earnest, you’ll want to figure out exactly what you wish to accomplish. Do you want to lose weight? Get washboard abs? Pack on more muscle mass? Develop your endurance? Or, perhaps, achieve all of these objectives?

Once you’ve decided upon your fitness goals, you can move on to the next step.

2) Do an inventory of your space.

Exercise equipment can eat up a lot of room in a residence. Matter of fact, a typical treadmill or elliptical trainer can consume as much space as an ordinary couch. And a home gym system, such as a Bowflex, can require an entire dedicated room.

So, decide exactly how much space you have available, and take detailed measurements. If you have a limited amount of room–let’s say you live in a studio apartment–then you’ll definitely need to consider space-saver equipment that folds away when not in use or can be stored in a closet or under a bed.

3) Nail down your budget.

No matter what product you’re considering, good exercise equipment is rarely cheap. You want to make sure you have enough funds to get a quality unit.

Generally speaking, the higher the price, the better the quality of the components, the more features you’ll get, and the better the warranty coverage. Also, the more you pay for a machine, the more likely you’ll be to actually put it to regular use.

4) Do research online.

On the Internet, you can find an abundance of data for nearly every piece of fitness equipment on the planet. A simple search engine query on any treadmill model, for example, will return hundreds of web sites.

I recommend you begin your search with the manufacturer of the product you’re considering. The manufacturer’s web site will likely have an extensive listing of product features and specifications; the better sites include owner’s manuals, too.

After this, drill down to the consumer-review sites, to get honest feedback from people who’ve actually purchased and used the equipment.

5) Give the machines a trial run.

Online research is tremendously helpful and saves time, but is no replacement for hands-on exposure. Try to find a local store that sells the product that interests you.

Once you arrive at the store, put the machine through the paces. Is it a treadmill? Run or walk on it for fifteen minutes. Is it a free weights system? Go through a condensed workout.

As you perform your “test drive,” take note of the quality of the construction. Is it stable? Or does it feel flimsy and cheap? Is the computer console (if it includes one) easy to read? Or is it too confusing?

The salesperson present will probably try to entice you into a purchase, but resist, at this point. Ask questions, but don’t allow them to pressure you into buying the product.

6) Make a final decision.

It’s show time. You’ve conducted research online. You’ve gained first-hand experience at the store. Now it’s time to make your final decision.

Or is it? Be honest with yourself. If you haven’t found exactly what you’re looking for, you’re under no obligation to buy something today just to feel as if you’re achieving a New Year’s resolution. After all, buying quality exercise equipment is a serious investment. Keep looking if you haven’t found the product that matches your needs and your budget.

7) Save money by purchasing online.

When you are ready to buy–whether that’s next week or two months from now–I strongly recommend that you purchase your exercise equipment online. Buying online directly from the manufacturer or a discount retailer can save you 40% or more off the list price. And because the market is so competitive, you’ll usually get free shipping, too.

Walking For Life

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Walking is a great activity that is good for those of us with sensitive joints. Besides this, walking has proven to be just as beneficial as any other cardio activity, which may come as a pleasant surprise to those of us who previously thought that the only way to a trim waistline was to pound out the miles on the treadmill at a blistering speed.

Contrary to what most have believed about exercise, walking is a great low-impact exercise that can be done just about anywhere. For example, when I used to work in an office, every now and then, I would get up and walk a loop around the building. Before I knew it, I had started a trend where each of my co-workers would periodically get up and go for a brief 2-3 minute walk. This is a great option for people like my former co-workers and myself, who are writers and programmers. Often times, as a writer, it is difficult to generate a topic or idea to write about; and even when you do, it is sometimes difficult to keep up the momentum without burning yourself out all together. Beyond this, it is important not to stay seated in one position for too long (as is often the case with those of us who work from home or in an office and are in the middle of writing something). You should get up and stretch your legs, perhaps even get some fresh air.

Most of the time, after a person comes back from a long walk, they will feel more rejuvenated and better able to focus on whatever the task is at hand. Granted, you don’t want to disappear for too long on your walks; however, if you have a 30 minute or longer lunch, why not bring your sneakers with you and go for a fifteen to twenty minute walk? You can burn a significant amount of calories in even the briefest of walks without trying too hard.

Walking at work is something that is definitely catching on, and it’s a great alternative for those people who work long days or spend a significant amount of time at the office and are doomed to get out when it is too dark to go for a run outside. There have been plenty of times when I felt somewhat devastated that I couldn’t go for a run all because I had woken up too late to go for a run in the morning or because I had gotten out of work later than I thought. However, you don’t have to feel limited by this anymore. Many employers are sensitive to their employees needs and have actually begun to provide them with facilities to work out or with a certain amount of allotted time each day within which they can fit an exercise routine into their schedule.

I used to meet up with a group of guys who worked for a major corporation near my apartment. Their employer not only had a full gym facility at their workplace, but they also allowed their employees an hour long “lunch” within which they could work out and eat before returning to work. During the week on certain days, I would sometimes meet up with this group of guys on their lunch break to hit the trails at a local park or to go to the track nearby and do track workouts. There are options out there to fit exercise into your schedule- whether it’s walking, biking or running!

The Fastest Cardio Workouts Ever

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Cardio workout is a form of exercise that raises your heart rate to a level higher than its maximum rate and sustaining that rate for a period of time. There are various types of cardio exercises but they can narrowed down into two main types: the Low-Intensity Cardio and High-Intensity Cardio Workout. The fastest cardio workouts ever are those that belong to the high-intensity cardio workout. In order for a cardio workout to be called a high-intensity workout, you have to get your heart rate more than 70-85% of its maximum rate. Otherwise, it will be low-intensity cardio. If you are after for faster weight loss, the high intensity cardio is the fastest to deliver results. Let’s take a look at some of the fastest cardio workouts.

Rope jumping

Rope jumping is a form of cardio workout that burns extra calories. If done properly and with coordination, you will be able to burn lots of calories in just 20 minutes of rope jumping. Rope jumping is also a form of exercise that’s ideal in developing a higher fitness level. Aside from the fact that it’s easy to learn, it’s also cost-effective since all you need is a rope. Rope jumping also strengthens the bones, improves endurance and agility.

Sprinting

If you are in a hurry to lose weight, you should try sprinting. Sprinting is one of the fastest cardio workouts ever. Actually, it’s even better than running. Running is also a good way to lose weight; however, it doesn’t really offer immediate results. Why? This is because running can speed up your metabolism only for a short period of time. Whereas when you do sprinting, your body continues to burn huge amount calories for days. Aside from burning fats, sprinting is also a good way to exercise your hamstring muscles. It also sculpts and tones your lower extremities and improves your endurance.

Cycling

Another form of fast cardio workout is cycling. A good thing about cycling is that it can be done both indoors and outdoors. Cycling is helpful in getting rid of those bulging stomach fats. It is also a good way to trim and tone the muscles of your thighs, calf and backside. Cycling also increases your stamina and enables you to carry out your activities of daily living more effectively. If you are a bit heavier than the normal, cycling is the best way to start your high-intensity cardio workout. Since it is an aerobic exercise, cycling greatly improves blood circulation, strengthens the heart and lung muscles, as well as improves oxygenation.

So there you have it; the fastest cardio workouts ever. Remember that high-intensity workout requires intense exercises. Those who can perform this form of exercise are those who are physically healthy and have already mastered the less intense workouts. If you are just starting out on your cardio workout, you can opt for the low-intensity cardio.

Although we are all used to associating cardio workout with weight loss, there is actually more to it than just a way to get rid of those unsightly cellulites. Apart from strengthening the heart and lung muscles, cardio workout also relieves stress, anxiety and promotes restful sleep. The release of mood enhancing hormones and endorphins during cardio exercises gives us a good feeling and positive perspective about things and our selves.
