Low Thyroid Levels: A Mission

The big question? Do you want the answer to why you feel so bad and still no answers? I have lost my health and regained it. When you are down, you know you are worth nothing and have nothing. How do you calculate the loss of all your hard work? The material you own means nothing. You don’t think of anything that does not lead to getting better. The future ? Forget it.

So take a few minutes and see what could have been if you felt well. Loss of vigor and excitement for life and the loss of the urge to better yourself. Loss of one or two pregnancies and their medical costs. The passed up opportunities for travel, advancement all just because of feeling so bad. Then the pain and suffering, then the vengefulness for the lack of diagnosis. My point is it is “it is worth quite a lot.” That is why I do this. The Torch Of Knowledge With Low Thyroid Levels

To focus on your needs: you are confounded by the large number of symptoms, (some authors list more than 40). Where did all of this premature aging come from? What has happened to my brain and its old sharpness? Can’t sleep and just can’t get past 3pm without some stimulant. (The thyroid turns down around 3pm) Then I am always adjusting the heat warmer when others are comfortable. Summer heat really gets to me. Like so many, I can’t lose weight even after stringent diet and exercise programs. On and on go the symptoms.

Some of the lucky ones get diagnosed by the blood test for thyroid. Many wait years to finally turn the test positive. What a relief. Some of my patients have discovered a good book by Mark Starr MD. Hypothyroidism II. This is an easy and yet a complete read about what has been slipping up on you.

A very helpful test is the morning temp test. Use a good thermometer (Geri-derm found at most drug stores) and check your morning temp the first 10 min you are awake. If it is below 97 degrees you have good reason to chase the diagnosis of low thyroid levels. Ladies.. wait till day three of flow to start the temps. It is more accurate.

There is an old chestnut form the past. Learn much from it.

When you look at the Greek torch of knowledge much can be learned. When the torch is held high, it lights for miles the darkness that is lack of knowledge. Many can see the flame and admire its illumination. But what is seldom told is “remember it casts a shadow of darkness on the holder” Yep this means unless you know this you can be blinded by what you think you know and be kept from further learning.

The reason I bring this up? Dr Starr and a lot of my knowledge collection on thyroid has suggested that the current knowledge of blood tests casts a shadow on the fact that it just isn’t all that good. And there is so much more that must be considered than the level of TSH in the body.

How could a very technical lab test costing in the neighborhood of $200 USD be less useful than a home temp test? Well it is evaluating on a small part of the picture. The temp test evaluates a much larger portion of the problem.

My previous blogs have demonstrated the great number of hidden thyroid hormone killers. When you do the superficial test, the TSH and get a normal read, the patient is most probably still suffering from low thyroid levels because of these after TSH hurdles that are blocking you from feeling well. Low Thyroid Levels

Few know that the Power Hormone of the body is Thyroid. It is generated from a gland at the base of the neck. Your body makes about a tablespoon of it a year. You have about 73 trillion cells that need to be driven to harmony and the proper speed.

The gland secrets the thyroid into the blood stream for transport to the cells. From there it enters the cells and works like that little guy at the back of an 8 man racing boat. Each must pull the oar at the same speed. Each must pull the oar at the same power. Each person on the team must be screamed at to catch up or slow down. If this does not happen the boat goes in curves. Power is wasted and if the pace is too slow, well they lose the race. Regulating this is the work of the thyroid hormone.

All doctors want to learn the symptoms of a disease to make the diagnosis. In low thyroid this is a hard job. There are up to 100 but there are Sixty five big ones. These symptoms change places and vary in many other ways as other diseases jump on the body. Here is a sampling: Obesity, un-responsive to diet and exercise. Cold or cool hands and feet, Puffiness, the kind that doesn’t go away when you push on it. Loss of libido, Dry skin, thin outer eyebrows. Mixed up thinking or what’s known as “brain fog” and then you have early gray hair.

In High School and University, I was a debater. We were required to make our arguments and assertions and then cite evidence of what we were saying. Here is a book that will do that and more Hypothyroidism Type II by Mark Starr MD. You can order it from my sight. I found my self very happy that much of my experience was being written there. As I spoke to friends they often suggested I write a book. After this book, Not now it says everything that I had already learned.

Now if one hormone can cause so much trouble if it is low, you should learn more about Thyroid and its general workings in the body. If you have low levels of it you are going to suffer. Next I want to give you some rules of thumb.

The bad news. Blood testing is poor and often misleading. Early on A test called the PBI was done. It turned out to be very inaccurate. Then tests for function of the gland when submitted to radio active dye was tossed out for lots of reasons. Then All were tested on over 100 known Low Thyroid Levels patients. None made the diagnosis. Oh yes one limped in and made it over the finish line. It was the TSH. Now on close comparison to the doctors who treat a lot of this disease, It doesn’t work well either. It finds some low thyroid levelss but most of us consider it too late and at the extreme expense of the vast majority missed. Suffering but just not enough to turn the TSH Positive.

There are daily contaminants in our water and food that are not tested for and yet block the complete functioning of this valuable hormone. Even if your TSH is normal, (the best thyroid test we have????) many chemicals block the thyroid function. If they don t totally block the hormone they slow it and blind any effort to make a solid diagnosis.

What to Do? Learn about the body temperature and its major signal to low thyroid. Take your under arm temp with a glass thermometer for 10 days and see if it is above 97 degrees. The mountain of evidence proving this is an accurate test in Dr Starr’s book.
