I decided to try out my new Vitamix for the first time today. I have been umming and ahhing about whether to use it before I moved house, since it was so neatly packed. But in the end my curiosity got the better of me and I unpacked my new, gleaming red 5200 model and placed it on my kitchen benchtop to behold.
Interestingly, the container is not actually held down to the base when it is used. I am not sure how it works, but the liquid gets pushed around at high speeds and yet the container stays on the base. The container simply sits on top of the motor, and when the machine is turned on it gets caught at the corners by four pieces of plastic. It is a very simple design, and I much prefer it to my old blender (a Sunbeam Cafe Series) because that blender had a locking mechanism and after only one year all four lock points had worn away.
At full speed the Vitamix blades travel at 384.26 km per hour, which tends to liquidise the contents very quickly. I’m also happy that the blender has a seven-year warranty because my last blender started to break after only one week.
I decided that I wanted to test out the blender with a pineapple that had been beckoning to be eaten, but I would never normally blend pineapple due to its stringiness. I was quite wary that I had never had success with pinepple before; would the Vitamix pull it off? I removed the skin from the pineapple and then placed the whole pineapple (cut into four chunks) into the container with a bit of water. I flicked the switch and WHOOOSH! the blender was quickly breaking through the pineapple. It was not as noisy as I expected, and when I came to pour the drink it was very smooth with a lot of ‘head’.
Overall, the smoothie was consistently smooth, and I was quite surprised that I could not identify the individual fibres. There were a few small lumps still in my drink due to me not having blended quite long enough, but that comes down to some experimentation I think, because it is possible to over-blend. I was a bit nervous not to let it run too long because six minutes blending would have turned it into a hot cooked soup! I think I only blended for 20-30 seconds so it was not warm at all.
I am looking forward to trying some of the recipes that came with the Vitamix. The cook book is very good quality and has been well thought out in terms of design. The book actually come with its own in-built book stand.
